New Web Press Central to MPI’s $12 Million Plant Expansion
Dual Production Streams 4X Output While Reducing Costs
MPI Web, as part of the company’s $12 Million expansion plan, has announced the purchase and installation of a new KBA 215 Dual Line Web Press for its Mississauga location. The new 40-inch web press is central to MPI Print’s business strategy of offering a comprehensive line of print offerings (digital, sheetfed, and web). It will double print speeds, while concurrently slashing costs. The new press helps the company become more responsive to customers with high volume requirements, and increased price sensitivity. Along with dual production streams, the new machine will have Q.I. new closed-loop auto colour, auto registration, auto cutoff system with in-line gluing, stitching and perfing. It will replace the aging Mitsubishi web press currently in place.
What does this mean for customers? A typical 32-page booklet, for example, could run on the new web press as two, simultaneously running, 16-page signatures that would be automatically stitched or glued together to produce a finished product… in one seamless and integrated operation. Without a separate, non-integrated bindery to hinder production flow, the new system will be twice as fast as the older web press… but with dual printing streams, each running 55,000 sheets/hour, production will 4X to a staggering 110,000 sheets/hour. At these levels, costs are slashed and the savings are passed on to customers in the form of lower pricing. This new, high-speed platform opens the doors to more creative solutions for larger and more complex projects. The beneficiaries will be MPI’s customers.
Expansion plans also call for the installation of new sheetfed presses, a new digital press, a full bindery, prepress equipment, and a large flat bed printer. The new sheetfed presses include a Mitsubishi Diamond 3000 8-Colour Perfector UV Ink Printing Press with dual coaters, perfect for printing plastics and synthetics. The UV Coating function provides the option of doing inline spot UV finishes. An additional Mitsubishi Diamond 3000 10-Colour Tandem Press with dual coaters will function as the workhorse for the revitalized Mississauga operation.
A new, and all-inclusive, bindery will support the new sheetfed presses. The bindery will be modeled after the Concord plant with:
- 5 Full Lines of Folders
- 2 sets of Polar Cutters with Jogging Tables & Auto stackers
- 2 Heat Seal shrink Wrapper
- Full Size Laminator with automatic Feeder and Stacker
- 2 Muller Martini Saddle Stitchers
- 2 Heidelberg Diecutters
- A Muller Perfect Binder with 16 Pockets + Cover
MPI’s Mississauga facility will also have a satellite Agfa Apogee prepress workflow system that can produce both proofs and plates. A new flat bed printer will compliment the plant’s offerings, with the ability to do large format printing. All the equipment at the plant will be integrated into an efficient and effective workflow system, designed to maintain high levels of exceptional customer service and quick turnarounds.
